City bikes

City legs  and city birds, lead me today to "city bikes".
Somehow, in student town Leuven (Louvain), bikes sometimes just happen to end up in the river Dijle.
I have always known about it but was never able to actually see or photograph the phenomenon until this year because of exceptionally low tide, a consequence of riverbank works.
They must be either stolen bikes, thrown in the river after a short ride by the thief, or the result of student activity... students who might or who might not have had a bit too much Belgian beer.
The environment organization cleans up the river in Leuven twice a year and on the average they come up with 300-500 bikes.

  4. Oh my. I love this post but how sad! What forlorn and abandoned little bikes!

  5. It's really sad to see that kind of "big" debris cluttering streets and rivers and beaches! I once thought it was mainly here in the US that we had so many people who cared little about the environment, but I guess they're everywhere these days. Hope you have a good week, Anni!

  8. Ziet er bekend uit. Dronken studenten die met hun fiets in de Dijle sukkelen.

    Groetjes,

  15. My word, that is a lot of bikes to find in one year! That last bike looks pretty rough, almost like it has the dredges of the river hanging on it! HAH :)
