Lunch at the Lys, the good life.

I was in Deinze, near Ghent a while ago but still wanted to share this address of the greatest place to sit, relax and enjoy lunch with a view ... in good company against an out-of-this-world background of peace and tranquility....
The pictures tell the rest...

June Academy trip

Visiting the art schools at the end of June is one of my all time favorites.
This year I only made it to Leuven, where  'Kantklossen' (hand made bobbin lace) figures on the list of subjects to study  at the Academy. Interested anyone?

Before the game

These days,  I do not have any difficulty at all finding Humans of Belgium, agreeing to a photo for TiB.
It is astonishing how everyone seems so confident about the outcome .....Lut was armed with champagne and all BEFORE the start of the game.

Human of Belgium, Rubens' waiter Robby

I unintentionally forgot my coat at the Belgian coast at Easter. It did provide me with the best excuse to drive over there and spend the day yesterday.
At  Brasserie Rubens where I stopped for a coffee break, I had the pleasure of meeting waiter Robby, who did not mind posing for TiB.
The original Brasserie Rubens in Knokke dates from 1926 but was destroyed during WW II. Today it is a café / restaurant on the Rubens Square with a pleasant summer and winter terrace, ideal for a my R & R day.

Humans of Belgium and Match-day 1

The Belgian Red Devils will compete for the first time in the World Cup this afternoon at 6 pm Belgian time.   I ran into these guys a few minutes after 1 pm  and asked them what they were up to.
"....on their way to grab a sandwich for lunch and then on to the big screens which are all over the city ..."
Could it be that schools closed down the afternoon of the first game? I doubt it.

Humans of Belgium and chocolates

As per the interest you expressed, here is another Human of Belgium, seen and photographed from the Gand Place in Brussels.
May I assume that the subject matter speaks for itself?

Humans of Belgium

I got the point. Many of you prefer people shots!  So, here goes, ... I met this beautiful young lady in Antwerp while she was distributing sales leaflets to steer people in the direction of a Desigual shop. I forgot her name; at that point, I did not realize that I would post her as the first Human of Belgium.  Had I known then I would have paid more attention.
I assume that all of you are familiar with Humans of New York and its derivatives ... Humans of Sydney, etc.?
I noticed there are plenty of Facebook groups such as Humans of Brussels, Humans of Antwerp ... , but as far as I can tell and to my surprise there is no Humans of Belgium blog yet ... . Shall I completely change philosophy?  It seems so much more time-consuming and labor intensive ... especially when you compare it to my favorite tactic, which is making quick photos from the car (when stopped of course) with a telephone :-).

Brussels' people

"Brussels' people " was the very first idea I had when I thought of starting a blog for the purpose of sharing my passion of photography or for having a reason to improve my skills,  whichever reason you prefer.
My youngest son reminded me the other day that I used to take more people shots.  He said he preferred those.
I thought of this while walking in the center of Brussels today and the man on the chair pointed to the lady with the purple hat and told me to take her picture  (not one of him).
You see what happened.

Red devils mania

On people's backs, on stacked cans in grocery stores, on bar windows in small villages, in private homes ... you can not miss the references to the Belgian Red Devils. Time for the the World Cup to start!
The Red Devils are  leaving on Tuesday for Brazil and will play their first game on June 17.
This is Belgium wishes them great success.
As they say:  "Whatever happens, that's football!"

The bank as patron of the arts

It is not all that often these days that young talented artists get treated in a special way and receive that little extra push. Belfius bank decorated the walls of  its rue de la Loi / Wetstraat offices in Brussels with works of Adriana and José Luis,  two Latin American artists who live, study and work in Brussels.
I  attended the opening of the exhibition in their presence.
José Luis Castro's abstract colourful works were inspired by his initial fascination with landscapes.
It is more difficult to capture Adriana Genel's art in a photograph; she makes lithographs, photo's,  video's etc.
Enjoyable environment  for its clients and staff that Belfius is providing with this initiative.
After snooping around a bit, I discovered that every individual office in the bank is decorated with panels showing sayings by famous people, of which an example is Eleanor Roosevelt's " The Future".

Tijl and Nele at Flagey, Ixelles

When I walked by this motorbike near Tijl and Nele at the Flagey lakes in Ixelles (http://whatisbelgium.blogspot.be/2014/01/tijl-and-nele.html)  I was reminded of Joseph's picture of his Eddy Merckx bike parked in front of the castle of Merode which I posted a few days ago.
But maybe, in this case here,  there is more to it than meets the eye...?
What do you think?
